John Lennon
(typography project)
Souvenir, created by Morris Fuller Benton for the American type founders’ company in early 1900s. Souvenir was a single-weight design with no italic or bold characteristics.
The font was originally promoted in 1923 with no traction and was quickly overshadowed by other designs. In fact, the font was nearly ignored for almost 40 years until the font was optimized for photographic lettering in the late 1900s. ITC or International Typeface Corporation was formed in 1971 and Souvenir was then redesigned by Ed Benguiat. ITC Souvenir was one of their first font families and included an italic and bold version.
